How eBay fees work in 2026

On eBay.com most sellers pay two fees when an item sells: a final value fee, a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and a per-order fee of $0.40 ($0.30 when the order total is $10 or less). The total amount of the sale includes the item price, shipping, handling and the sales tax eBay collects, so tax and shipping raise your fees too. Payment processing is included in the final value fee: there is no separate processing fee.

Final value fee rates by category

Most categories pay 13.6% on the first $7,500 per item and 2.35% above that. Books, movies and music pay 15.3%. Coins and trading cards pay 13.25%. Jewelry pays 15% up to $5,000 and 9% of the whole sale above it; handbags 15% up to $2,000, then 9%. Watches pay 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500 and 3% above. Guitars pay 6.7%. Athletic shoes of $150 or more pay 8% with no per-order fee. These are the rates for sellers without an eBay Store (a Starter Store pays the same); Basic and higher Store subscribers pay lower rates that this calculator does not model.

Promoted Listings, international and seller-level fees

General Promoted Listings campaigns charge the ad rate you choose, from 2% to 100%, on the total sale amount, but only when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within 30 days. A 1.65% international fee applies when the buyer’s address is outside the US, unless you ship with eBay International Shipping. Below Standard sellers pay 6 percentage points more (7 after four months), and sellers with a very high “item not as described” rate pay 5 more (6 after four months).

A worked example

You sell a $25 item with $5 shipping and no sales tax. The total amount of the sale is $30. eBay takes 13.6% × $30 = $4.08, plus the $0.40 per-order fee: $4.48, or 14.9%. After an $8 product cost and a $4 label, you keep $13.52, a 45% margin. Promote that listing at 5% and you pay $1.50 more when the sale comes from the ad.

Break-even and target-margin prices

The break-even price is the lowest item price that covers every fee and cost. The target-margin price is what to charge to keep your chosen share of the sale. Both account for the per-order fee step at $10 and for category rates that change above a price threshold.

eBay fee FAQ

How much does eBay take per sale?

For most categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total amount of the sale (item price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500 per item, plus a $0.40 per-order fee, or $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less. Some categories differ: books, movies and music pay 15.3%, guitars 6.7%, and athletic shoes of $150 or more 8% with no per-order fee.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, shipping, handling and the sales tax eBay collects from the buyer.

Does eBay charge a separate payment processing fee?

No. Payment processing is included in the final value fee, so US sellers pay no separate processing fee.

How do Promoted Listings fees work?

With a General (cost-per-sale) campaign you choose an ad rate from 2% to 100%. You pay it on the total sale amount, including shipping and tax, only when a buyer clicks your promoted listing and buys it within 30 days.

What is eBay’s international fee?

eBay adds 1.65% of the total amount of the sale when the buyer’s shipping or registered address is outside the US. It does not apply when the item ships through eBay International Shipping.

Does eBay charge to list an item?

You get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month (more with a Store). After that, each listing costs $0.35 per category, whether or not it sells.
