Etsy Free Shipping: Is the $35 Guarantee Worth It? (With Real Numbers)

Updated

Should you offer free shipping on Etsy? The answer comes down to a few rules and some arithmetic. This guide explains how Etsy treats shipping price in US search, what the $35 free shipping guarantee does, and how to price so free shipping doesn't quietly eat your profit.

The rules below come from Etsy's Help Center article How to Offer Free Shipping and its Seller Handbook, checked in October 2026. They focus on orders shipping to US buyers. Etsy changes these programs from time to time, so confirm on the linked pages before you change your shop.

Shipping cost vs. shipping price

Etsy separates two numbers:

"Free shipping" only sets the shipping price to $0. You still pay for the label. The question is whether that cost comes out of your margin or is built into the item price.

1. The $35 free shipping guarantee

If you set up a free shipping guarantee, Etsy automatically gives US buyers free shipping on:

Per Etsy's Help Center, a free shipping guarantee gives your products priority placement in US shoppers' search results. It applies to both US and international sellers shipping to the US, and your shipping prices for buyers in other countries don't change. Buyers still pay for any shipping upgrade they choose.

A few details catch sellers out:

2. The under-$6 shipping price rule

Since October 1, 2024, Etsy prioritizes US domestic listings with a shipping price under $6 in search. Etsy says its data shows buyers are less likely to purchase once shipping is $6 or more. Some listings are excluded from this rule, including:

Etsy also says shoppers are 20% more likely to complete a purchase when an item ships free, so free shipping is what it pushes hardest.

Free shipping doesn't change your Etsy fees

Here's the part that surprises people. Etsy's transaction fee is 6.5% of the item price plus the shipping you charge, and payment processing for US shops is 3% + $0.25 on the order total. Fees follow the money, not the label.

Take Etsy's own example: a $35 item with $5 shipping, or the same item at $40 with free shipping. Ignoring sales tax:

$35 + $5 shipping$40, free shipping
Buyer pays$40.00$40.00
Listing fee (renewal on sale)$0.20$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5% × $40)$2.60$2.60
Payment processing (3% × $40 + $0.25)$1.45$1.45
You receive after Etsy fees$35.75$35.75

Identical. Built into the price, free shipping costs nothing extra in fees. Our Etsy fees explained guide covers each of these fees in detail.

The multi-item trap

Where free shipping does cost money is on orders with more than one item, especially when your items are under $35 each.

Say you sell earrings at $20 with $4 shipping, $0 for each additional pair, and one label costs you $4.50 whether the box holds one pair or two. A buyer orders two pairs.

No guaranteeGuarantee on
Buyer pays$44.00 ($40 + $4)$40.00 (free shipping)
Listing fees (2 × $0.20)$0.40$0.40
Transaction fee (6.5%)$2.86$2.60
Payment processing (3% + $0.25)$1.57$1.45
Shipping label$4.50$4.50
Left before materials$34.67$31.05

The guarantee cost you $3.62, because the order crossed $35 and the $4 shipping charge vanished. A single pair ($24) is unaffected.

The fix is to move shipping into the item price. Price the earrings at $22 with $2 shipping. A one-pair buyer still pays $24 in total, and your shipping price is now well under $6. A two-pair buyer pays $44 with free shipping, and you're back to $34.67 before materials. The buyer's total doesn't change, but the guarantee no longer costs you.

The rule: build in enough shipping that an order which crosses $35 still covers its label. Test it on the basket your buyers most often order.

Etsy's smart pricing tool

US shops that set up the guarantee can use Etsy's smart pricing tool to raise prices on items $35 and up in bulk. Per Etsy's Help Center:

The tool is a shortcut, not a strategy: "average" means some orders will cost you more than you added. Check your real label costs first.

Should you offer free shipping?

It usually makes sense if most of your items are $35 or more, your postage cost is predictable (flat envelopes, similar-sized boxes), and competing shops in your searches already ship free.

Think harder if your items are cheap and often bought in multiples, your label costs vary a lot by size or distance, or a big built-in shipping amount would make your price look out of line with similar listings. Whatever you decide, keep any remaining US shipping price under $6 unless your listings are on the exceptions list.

Before you switch

Write down your real label cost for each product, decide how much of it to build into the price, and check what you keep on a single-item order and on your most common multi-item order. Turn on the guarantee only if both still leave a margin you're happy with, and recheck after any carrier rate change. Our free Etsy pricing and profit checklist walks through the same steps for your whole shop.

Run your own numbers

Plug your item price and shipping into the free Etsy fee calculator to see each fee and what you keep, first with shipping charged separately and then built into the price. It's free with no sign-up.
